for Cecelia

The twenty-fourth work in 2014’s 100 Poems project. A setting of E. E. Cummings’ if you like my poems let them.

The unusual instrumentation of this work makes is stand out against the rest of my repertoire. There is, however, a precedent for this instrumentation: the fifth of song from Five Songs for Soprano, tw, which soprano, guitar, a single woodblock. This sparse orchestration and steady ostinatos from the woodblock, give the piece a folk-like, almost Medieval quality, as the feel of the work is distinctly narrative and theatrical.
