O Barco Preto

Portuguese for “The Black Boat,” O Barco Preto is a tone poem. Drawing on my familiarity with the viola, an instrument I’ve played since 1997, I wanted to express my sense of harmony through the often underrated viola. Combining close and delicate harmonies and highly rhythmic sections with the viola’s often dark and nasal timbre, O Barco Preto is meant to track a boat’s journey on the high seas, from its first moments off the dock, through heavy storms, and finally, reaching its destination.

This piece took 2nd prize in the 2005 Newcomb Young Composer Contest.
