Each player is to write his own part in this quartet but follow the following specifications: Each part is to be 224 measures in 4/4 time using only 40 whole notes, 80 half notes, 160 quarter notes, 320 eighth notes, 4 16-measure rests, and 2 16-measure pizzicato sections. There are to be no other notes or rests used. Each part must use the following pitches only: Violin I: C, D, E, F, G; Violin II: E, F-sharp, G, A, B; Viola: D, E, F-sharp, G, A; Cello: F-sharp, G-sharp, A-sharp, B, C-sharp. Parts are to be written without the consultation of the other players and then performed together.
