Thirteen and three-fourths mesostics on John Cage

Following John Cage’s directions for writings mesostics, I went through Cage’s own “An Autobiographical Statement” and wrote 13 and 3/4 mesostics using the letters of John Cage’s name. After the mesostics were written, I used chance operations to determine the times within the 14-minute duration of the work that each word would be spoken (out to 4 decimal places). The resulting work is a precisely spoken text and listeners might be able to catch familiar phrases and names and relate them to Cage’s overall oeuvre.

The piece was premiered with a simultaneous performance of Alphabet Music.
