Three Poems by E. E. Cummings [2009]

  (2009)

Synopsis

The second collection of three poems by Cummings.

This work for two unaccompanied voices is the first work where I made use of my letter-pitch substitution method of composition. In this method, each letter of the alphabet can be represented by one of the 12 chromatic pitches. In this specific work, once a tone row was derived using this method, the row is manipulated in a variety of ways such that all pitch material is derived entirely from this single row.

The inspiration for this work was the thought of two children singing to each other. In performance, the singers are to face each other. At the premiere of the first movement (sung by me and Sabina Kziezopolska), we wore t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers in order to present ourselves as young lovers.
